WhenthemotheroffilmmakerChongyanLiu’sboyfriendcomesfromChinatostaywiththecoupleintheirsmallParisianapartment,itgraduallybecomesclearwherehisviolencecomesfrom.Initially,Liufilmsthequarrelsinthecrampedkitchen,withwhatappearstobeahiddencamera;thefacesareblurred.Reproachesaboutpettyannoyancesflybackandforth,untiltheargumentsbecomebitterlyserious.
Afterthat,theconversationsinthehouseareaccompaniedbystilllifesoftherooms,imagesofhouseholditemsthathavebeenbroken,andsceneswithintimateclose-upsofthe(nowex-)boyfriend’sbody.Offscreen,motherandsontaketurnstalkingabouttheirdifficultandtoxicrelationship,revealingthatdomesticviolenceispassedonfromonegenerationtothenext.
