ShmuelGonzalesisthelivingproofoftheresilienceoftheimmigrantcommunitiesthatforgedtheUnitedStates:didn’thisMexicanandJewishancestorsmakeittoLosAngeles?Inanycase,thisiswhatherepeatstohimselfinordertocopewiththetraumaofnowfeelingaforeignerinhisowncountry–duetotheremarksandplansofDonaldTrump,butalsotothetransformationsinhisneighbourhood.BoyleHeightswasformerlyarefugefornewarrivals;today,cranesarebusilysanitisingit.Followingthephotographer-historianintoacemeteryoraworksite,JohnHulseyseemstobeunrollingthebandagesofamummifiedcity.Inthereflectionsofhistoricbuildingsintoday’sshopwindows,hetriestouncovertracesofpassingtime,bothpastandfuture,whilearchiveimagesattesttothepresenceofhumansfromanotherageontheverysamespot.Butasiftoavoidanover-monolithicviewofhistory,thefilmmakerpresentsthesephotographsobliquely.Theyareincomplete,manipulated,projectedontosurfacesthatreshapethemandmakevisibletheirlayersoftime.Throughhisinterviewofawomanwhogrewupinpost-warCaliforniaandwhoexplainsthat,atthetime,itwasnaturaltogetridofanunseemly“Jewishnose”,thefilmmakerhighlightsthefiercedeterminationofcommunitiesthatmanagetoadapttoahostileenvironmentandthen,throughanironictwistofhistory,findthemselvespushedoutofwhathadbecomewelcomingrefuge.
