ThefilmsofUlrikeOttinger(b.1942)areshapedbyafascinationwithplace,atopicalandtopographicalcuriositythatdrivestheirwanderlustacrosslocalesbothimaginedandreal,fromthefantasticallyspectralBerlinoftheearlyFreakOrlandoandthenostalgiashroudedVienneseamusementparkofPrater,tothevast,remotesteppesofCentralAsiaexploredinTaigaandthebusybanquethallsofpresent-daySeoulinTheKoreanWeddingChest.Ottinger’sfictionfilmskaleidoscopeacarnivalesquevisionoftheworld,stagingunpredictableencounterswitharemarkablymotleycastof“freak”outsiders–lovers,pirates,brigands,graftersandtheiradversaries.WhileOttinger’sdocumentaries,incontrast,focusinsightfullyonthequotidianrealityofeverydaypeople,butarenolesscolorfulandexuberantintheirspiritedexplorationoftheplayfulandpoeticintersectionofthetraditionalandcontemporary.
