Eight-year-oldMatthiasdreamsthathewillsomedaybecomeapilotandhisdivorcedparentswillgetbacktogether.HewaitsyearninglyforhisninthbirthdaybecausehisfatherhastoldhimthestoryofIcarus,andpromisedtotakehimonasightseeingflight.WhenMatthias'fatherdoesn'tcomehome,heisdevastated.Herunsthroughoutthecity,talkstohisfriendabouttherelationshipsofadults,looksforhisfatherathisdesk,andgetshimselfintoconflictwiththepolice.Ashesitsaloneontheroofofahouse,hecomestotheconclusionthatIcarusdidn'tplummettotheearthbecausehedidn'tlistentohisfather,butratherbecausehisfatherhadforgottenhim.
