WengerwasborninStrasbourgandraisedinDuttlenheim.Hewasintroducedtofootballbyhisfather,themanagerofthelocalvillageteam.Afteramodestplayingcareer,inwhichhemadeappearancesforseveralamateurclubs,Wengerobtainedamanager'sdiplomain1981.FollowinganunsuccessfulperiodatNancywhichculminatedinhisdismissalin1987,WengerjoinedASMonaco;theclubwontheleaguechampionshipin1988.In1991,WengerguidedMonacotovictoryintheCoupedeFrance,buttheirfailuretoregaintheleaguetitleinlaterseasonsledtohisdeparturefromtheclubbymutualconsentin1994.HebrieflycoachedJapaneseJ.LeaguesideNagoyaGrampusEight,whichwontheEmperor'sCupandJapaneseSuperCupduringhisstint.
