DuringtheFirstWorldWar,aCanadiansoldier,devastatedbytherecentdeathofhisfiancee,arrivesatthefrozenRussiancityofArchangel.Whilebilletedwithalocalfamily,heisastonishedtodiscoverawomanthatmayormaynotbetheloverhethoughtlost.Unfortunately,sheissufferingfromamnesiaandremembersnothingoftheirformerpassion.Arivalsuitor,claimingtobeherhusbandandwhomayalsobesufferingfromamnesia,isequallyunsuccessfulatwinningheraffection.ThemelancholystoryplaysitselfoutagainstthemadnessoftheGreatWar.

早期的Guy Maddin在視覺上更加純粹地直接模仿早期黑白片，節奏更加自然，但辨識度也相應下降。後期快速剪輯和不斷變化的視覺雖然不自然，但更有存在的必要。
這個其實風格很正，完全是默片表象的先鋒式演繹，包括聲音處理也有意思，沒有花花綠綠的技巧和混亂的鏡頭，當然也可以說早期的蓋伊馬丁還沒找到自己更加跳脫的那部分
真正的複古，是從骨子裡透出來的，電影從妝造、運鏡、場景設計、浮誇的劇作，甚至到那份獨特的神經質，都仿佛真是從默片時代穿越而來。我總感覺這又是一次對《迷魂記》的拙劣緻敬，隻是惡果也反彈到了男主身上，也有些對戰争體制剝奪人性的諷刺。
都是苦戀
