FočaisamunicipalityineasternBosniaandHerzegovinawherewomenwererapedandabusedonalargescaleduringtheBosnianwar.Women,andgirlsasyoungas12yearsold,wereimprisonedatvariouslocationstobegang-raped,mostlybySerbianfighters.ThiswascausefortheYugoslaviaTribunaltodesignate“systematicrape”and“sexualslavery”—warcrimesthatfrequentlywentunprosecuted—astortureandcrimesagainsthumanity.Asaresult,thesecrimescannowbeuniversallyprosecuted.
