DuringtheFirstWorldWar,aCanadiansoldier,devastatedbytherecentdeathofhisfiancee,arrivesatthefrozenRussiancityofArchangel.Whilebilletedwithalocalfamily,heisastonishedtodiscoverawomanthatmayormaynotbetheloverhethoughtlost.Unfortunately,sheissufferingfromamnesiaandremembersnothingoftheirformerpassion.Arivalsuitor,claimingtobeherhusbandandwhomayalsobesufferingfromamnesia,isequallyunsuccessfulatwinningheraffection.ThemelancholystoryplaysitselfoutagainstthemadnessoftheGreatWar.

早期的Guy Maddin在视觉上更加纯粹地直接模仿早期黑白片，节奏更加自然，但辨识度也相应下降。后期快速剪辑和不断变化的视觉虽然不自然，但更有存在的必要。
这个其实风格很正，完全是默片表象的先锋式演绎，包括声音处理也有意思，没有花花绿绿的技巧和混乱的镜头，当然也可以说早期的盖伊马丁还没找到自己更加跳脱的那部分
真正的复古，是从骨子里透出来的，电影从妆造、运镜、场景设计、浮夸的剧作，甚至到那份独特的神经质，都仿佛真是从默片时代穿越而来。我总感觉这又是一次对《迷魂记》的拙劣致敬，只是恶果也反弹到了男主身上，也有些对战争体制剥夺人性的讽刺。
