FočaisamunicipalityineasternBosniaandHerzegovinawherewomenwererapedandabusedonalargescaleduringtheBosnianwar.Women,andgirlsasyoungas12yearsold,wereimprisonedatvariouslocationstobegang-raped,mostlybySerbianfighters.ThiswascausefortheYugoslaviaTribunaltodesignate“systematicrape”and“sexualslavery”—warcrimesthatfrequentlywentunprosecuted—astortureandcrimesagainsthumanity.Asaresult,thesecrimescannowbeuniversallyprosecuted.
Theso-calledFočacasecalledongreatcouragefromthecountlesswomenwhotestifiedabouttheirhorrificexperiences.Topreservetheiranonymitythewomenwereidentifiedusingnumbersorletters.Inthisforensicvideoessay,filmmakerKumjanaNovakovausesmostlywrittentestimoniesbythewomentoexplorethecollectivememoryoftherapecamps.Ingrainyvideofootage,thecameraexplorestheplaceswheretheseinhumancrimestookplace,whilethewomenspeakabouttheunspeakable.
